***Norwegian Escape – The Spa Experience!

Going to the spa on the Norwegian Escape is a relaxing experience. Within the spa there are specialized rooms and areas just to hang out- with a beautiful view. There is a beverage area with orange water, lemon water, and hot teas. There is a large pool with jets and a whirlpool. If you choose to buy a pass or if you are staying in a spa room, you will feel pampered in the spa area!

If you are not in a spa room, if you sign up for the thermal suite and pool on embarkation day and you get a special package price. Or, better yet, sign up online, before the cruise starts.  They sell a limited number of these packages so that the area never gets crowded, so you will want to sign up by the first day/night. The spa is open 8:00am – 10:00pm except for the last day when the thermal suites and pool are only open until 8:00pm. Pricing is based on number of days of cruise: 2 day-$79, 7 day-$199, 12 day-$279 (prices if booked before cruise starts). The pass gives you complete usage of saunas, showers, steamroom, salt room, snow room, and therapeutic pool and whirlpool.

If you have a spa pass (sticker on your card), you stop at the desk to check in. You leave your room key and in exchange they will give you a bracelet. The bracelet allows you to enter the thermal suite.  You can lock your belongings in the lockers in the changing area. In the changing area you will find a beautiful view, towels, robes, hair dryers, showers, and bathrooms. After you change and put your bathing suit and robe on, enter the spa area. There are plenty of lounging chairs. You can also select the heated tile lounge chairs to relax on.

Choices in the spa area include a pool with all different kinds of water jets, a whirlpool, a sauna, a sanarium, rain shower, aromatic steam bath, and salt bath. This spa area is a great area to just relax and unwind. I found that this area never really got crowded (even with 4900 guests!). I stayed in the studios so it was a great place to hangout as a solo traveler. I saw many other solo travelers there also. Calming music plays in the background. I either closed my eyes and relaxed or read or listened to my ipod. I felt it was a good choice especially for sea days!

***Hints And Tips For The Norwegian Breakaway!

I recently had the opportunity to cruise on the beautiful Norwegian Breakaway out of New York. The Breakaway’s first sailing was in May 2013 so she is not even a year old. The Breakaway has a New York theme throughout the ship since she sails out of New York year round. The Breakaway’s godmothers are the Rockettes. Guest capacity is around 4200. The design of the ship is very nice so rarely did it feel crowded. The following are some hints and tips for the Breakaway.

-The fish on the carpet in the hallways are always facing the front of the ship- helps with confusion on which direction you want to go.

-Drop off your carry on luggage at Headliners when you get on the ship instead of carrying around. Have lunch and check out the ship until cabins are ready. Then pick up your carry on luggage.

-When get on ship on Embarkation day, instead of going to the buffet, head to either O’Sheehan’s or The Taste/Savor (whichever is open that afternoon). You will be able to have a more leisurely lunch (less crowded than buffet).

-Try to go for check in 11:00am and be 1 of the first people on board!

-Put bathing suit in carry on so can go in whirlpool, pool, or to Spa on Embarkation day. Otherwise could be delay in getting your luggage.

-Take a tour of the spa on Embarkation day and you can enter in drawing. Multiple prizes given away. Many time around $500 in spa services given away. Drawing for my cruise was at 5:30. Need to be present to win.

-If you sign up for thermal suite and pool first day for complete usage of saunas, showers, steamroom, salt room, and therapeutic pool and whirlpool you get special package price. They sell a limited number of these packages so that the area never gets crowded, so you will want to sign up the first day/night. The spa is open 8:00am – 10:00pm except for the last day when the thermal suites and pool are only open until 8:00pm. Pricing is based on number of days of cruise: 2 day-$79, 7 day-$199, 12 day-$279.

-Lockers are available at the Spa for those with access to the thermal suites and pool/whirlpool.

-Bring earplugs for at night in case you go to bed early and there is loud talking in the hallways. Earplugs will also block out any announcements in the hallway from the cruise director.

-There are a limited number of passes to the Vibe beach area. It is a private sun deck available to Haven and suite guests. Only a certain number of passes are sold each sailing so that the Vibe area never gets crowded. If you are interested in this type of pass, try to check in early on Embarkation day and go right to the Guest Services desk as soon as you get on the ship to see if they have any passes left.

-Sign up for as many shows as possible online before Embarkation day. When you get on the ship, sign up for all remaining shows either at the Box Office or on the large touch screen in the hallway outside the theatre. Shows will fill up quickly. Since the theatre only holds 850 people, those with reservations will almost fill each show. All reservations are released 10 minutes before the show. At this time, anyone waiting in the standby line can be let in the theatre. Standby can be nice if you want to see a show more than once.

-Every day at 7:30am there is a Rockettes stretch class in the group room in the gym area. This class is free and lasts for 30 minutes. Try to arrive early to make sure you get a spot. There is only room for about 20 people once the mats are down.

-Fab Abs class is free and offered everyday also. Sometimes offered at 5pm or 7pm. Need to check Freestyle Daily.

-Zumba is offered on sea days either at 8am or 9am. Classes will usually take place in the Bliss Lounge. Classes are for 30-40 minutes. We had 50-60 people participating each day.

-Walnuts can be found towards the rear of the ship as part of the buffet in the morning. Only in this area. Great with oatmeal and cinnamon in the morning.

-Cirque (Jungle Fantasy) is awesome. All seats are good but arrive early so you have a better selection. Performances are right in front of you. Surf and Turf dinner is served along with promiscutto appetizer and triple chocolate delight dessert. Show is 1 ¾ hours. Try to make reservations early since shows will fill up.

-Found that some of the restaurants were on the dark side. Might want to bring little flashlight to help read the menu. Small Breakaway flashlights can be purchased in the gift store also.

-Can get souvenir map of voyage plotted out, signed by Captain. $8.95 each. Comes rolled in tube, easy for transporting.

-80’s party is lots of fun.

-Fireworks are beautiful. I watched them from Spice H2O. We had a beautiful clear night.

-Large chess set is on Deck 8- starboard forward side. On Deck 7 in front – shuffleboard.

-Lots of sitting areas on Deck 8 in the Waterfront section. You can also dine outside. There is a wraparound deck that you can walk around (goes around 90% of the ship).

-O’Sheehan’s is great for breakfast. Nice choices and everything is cooked up quickly and fresh.

-At ports, Norwegian always has tents set up with seats, drinks, and wet washcloths. Nice meeting area or place to rest when returning to the ship.

-Use Norwegian IConcierge on your Smart Phone.

-Choices galore: 29 restaurants ; 22 Bars and Lounges!!

-Try a New York style Sabrett hot dog!! Sometimes set up by pool another time near atrium area.

-Play WII on the big screen in the atrium!

-Uptown Grill has all kinds of burgers and meat for sandwiches along with French fries.

-Go to the Q & A presented by the Cruise Director –running a Hotel on Sea. Hotel director, bar director, and head executive chef answer guests’ questions.

-Go to the Q & A presented by the Cruise Director- the Captain and hotel director answer questions. Nice informational presentation by Cruise Director.

-Manhattan Room has slightly different menu from Taste and Savor. The menu is posted right outside each restaurant. Some nights there are ‘Burn the Floor’ dancing shows in the Manhattan Room. Check your Freestyle Daily for dates/times.

-Classes offered at the gym include Pilates and Yoga for $12 each or $30 for 3.

-Beautiful to watch front of ship from decks. Many times see dolphins playing.

-There are switches in the room that turn on lights on outside of room to let cabin steward know if you do not want to be disturbed or you want your cabin made up.

-Go to the Q & A by the performers. Very interesting. The panel that I saw consisted of 2 performers from ‘Burn the Floor’, the hypnotist- Brenda Kaye, and 3 performers from ‘Rock of Ages’.

-Go first thing in the morning on the Aqua slides and you will not need to wait in line.

-Watch a sunrise and sunset!!

***Hints and Tips for the Carnival Splendor

A few months ago I had the opportunity to cruise on the beautiful Carnival Splendor. We went out of New York and visited the Bahamas and Port Canaveral. We had a great time. The ship never felt crowded. I would like to share some hints and tips that might be helpful to you.

-If Platinum or Diamond VIFP level, drop off your luggage at the Platinum/Diamond drop off point. The porter will put a ‘Faster to the Fun’ luggage tag on your bags. Your bags will be delivered to your cabin very quickly (quicker than other luggage).

-If interested in relaxing during cruise and you do not have a Spa room, you can purchase a pass for access to the treatment pool and hot tiled loungers (designed by chiropractor), and steam rooms for $149 for 1 person or $225 for 2 people. Unlimited access for the entire cruise (8 days). The special pool has minerals, including dead sea salt, added to the water. The water is body temperature. There is room for at least 17 people in the pool. The pool has many jets and fountains similar to a whirlpool. There is a beautiful view from all these spa locations.

-Go to the gym and use all equipment for free. Take advantage of the free ‘Stretch and Relax’ class at 7am every day and the ‘Fab abs’ class at 7:30am every day. Great way to start the day. Pick up a schedule from the gym since not all activities will be in the Carnival ‘Funtimes’ daily paper. There is also a free stretch class at 5pm in the gym. Many free lectures are offered in the gym on sea days also. Lockers are available across from the gym, inside the Ladies changing room. Great for going to the gym then to the therapy pool and/or the thermal/sauna suites.

-In each room, there is a beautiful set of bathrobes that can be used during your Carnival vacation!

-Check out the Relaxation Room above the gym on Deck 12. Get there by the back stair case behind the gym on Deck 11. The Relaxation Room is there for people waiting for their spa treatments but anyone can go in. There is all types of hot teas available, lemon water, and orange water. The view from this location is beautiful. There are comfortable chairs and loungers. It is a great location to go to relax and listen to your ipod or quietly read a book.

-Try out the different samplings available at ‘The Taste’ on deck 5. Check out the schedule, many times The Taste is available on sea days. They have a sampling of food from all the different specialty restaurants on Carnival ships (Red Frog Pub, Pinnacle Steak House, the Blue Iguana bar,…) Most of the time ‘The Taste’ is open 5:30 to 8:30.

-In the dining room, order as many meals/starters/desserts that you would like that you have room to eat. For example, we get 2 orders of lobster when they offer that choice.

-Brunch on sea days is awesome. Great selections for starters and desserts. Entrees are either breakfast or lunch foods that can be ordered any time while brunch is being offered (8:30-1:30). Brunch is in the Gold Pearl restaurant in the back of the ship, deck 3. Some offerings are salmon fillet, steak and eggs (Filet Mignon), and any type of omelette. You can get side orders of bacon, sausage, … also. They give you a basket full of delicious pastries to start your meal also! They offer an awesome double brownie for dessert!! Remember, if you are at the Gold, Platinum, or Diamond VIFP level, you can get any kind of drink with your coupon, at the brunch (ex- mudslide, pina collata,…). Another thing to keep in mind is that you can get any size table. If you prefer a table for two, all you have to do is ask before they seat you.

-To get to 1 side of the ship from the other, you can use deck 5 or to cut down on congestion between guests, photographers, and groups hanging out, you can cut over on any deck with cabins. For example, we were on deck 7 aft and when we left the theatre in the front of the ship, we went up to deck 7 and then just walked down the hallway.

-There is an on board ‘future cruise’ person that can help you book your next cruise. Your travel agent will get credit for your booking, You will get a $50, $75, $100, or $200 on board credit for booking your next cruise while on board depending on the length of the cruise. You will also receive 2 coupons that can be used by any family or friend to get the same amount of on board credit that you receive if booking the same cruise within 60 days of when you deposit.

-Laundry rooms are available if you have clothes that need to be washed so they do not stain. There are also multiple areas on the ship where you can iron your clothes.

-There is usually sitting space in the back of the buffet. Many people do not know that the same food is available in the back of the buffet area. We never had to wait for a seat. Another option is to go upstairs to deck 10, the ‘The Rotissiere’ and there is usually seating there. Besides the regular buffet lunchtime, you can go to sit down lunch, get a pizza (available 24 hours), a sandwich at the deli, a burrito and nacho chips at the Burrito stand, Indian food at the Tandoor area, stir fry at the Mongolian Wok, or chicken and comfort foods at the Rotissiere.

-Soft serve ice cream is available 24 hours a day!

-Go to the Spa raffle drawings (Splendor had at 4:30) on embarkation day. They give away around $500 worth of services. At least 4 or 5 prizes given away.

-Your Time Dining is wonderful since you can go to the dining room anytime between 5:45 – 9:30. Request when making booking. It will fill up.

-If want to go to Mongolian Wok, go to wait in line around 11:45. They open at noon. When we did this, we had lunch by 12:05 or so. Otherwise, you will need to wait in longer lines.

-Use stairs instead of elevators to keep weight gain to a minimum! Many times it is faster also!

-If not doing excursion, get off ship and just walk around. Then get back on ship, not crowded at all.

-Go to an art auction and get a free print. Allocate at least 1 ½ hours.

-Go to shore talk. Will be introduced to captain and senior staff.

-Carnival has a ‘Care’ team to help any guest that unexpectedly needs to leave for home or needs special assistance…

-Check out the chocolate extravaganza, many times offered the same time as the lunch in the Splendido Restaurant on Lido deck. Many times offered on 2nd to the last day. Usually on a sea day.

-The evening entertainment and shows are excellent! Choices include singers and dancers in broadway style shows (The Beat, Vroom, Fiesta Latina), hypnotists, jugglers, magicians, and also different comedians giving shows throughout the entire cruise…

-Free or low cost wifi is available at most port stops. Watch where the crew go to log on. That will be one of the best places to access wifi. The wifi at Freeport, Bahamas, is called ‘Freeport HarbourFr’. A great location to access this connection is outside ‘Seaman’s Rest Sports Bar’. If you have a smart phone, just take it out to see what connections are available and if any are open and unlocked. Wifi is available at restaurants and bars in Nassau, Bahamas (Burger King, Dunkin Donuts,…)

-Bring your bathing suit in your carry on for Embarkation day. Even if leaving from New York, there is a roof over the pool in the Lido area so very comfortable temperatures. The roof slides open on nice days!

-Get a spa room if possible, not much more expensive but get so much more. Extras include: special spa robes and slippers, Elemis products in your room (lotion, shampoo, conditioner, soap), 2 complimentary pilates or yoga classes, and full access to the therapy pool and thermal suite!

-Carnival does a great job with celebrating holidays also. We were on the Splendor on Thanksgiving. A wonderful traditional turkey dinner was available for dinner!

If you are interested in booking a cruise on the beautiful Carnival Splendor, let me know. I would be happy to help you find the best cabin so that you can have a memorable vacation!! Email me at dreameztravel@gmail.com. Reach me on twitter with @dreameztravel.

***Great Entertainment Options on Norwegian Getaway!

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that the seven-time Tony Award nominated musical LEGALLY BLONDE will be featured on Norwegian Getaway, along with an additional Broadway show: the dance sensation BURN THE FLOOR and an all-new stand-up comedy program in partnership with Levity Entertainment Group, the largest producer of comedians in the world. The line also introduced all of the varied and exciting entertainment acts and venues that will debut on the ship, including Howl at the Moon at Headliners Comedy Club. These exciting entertainment experiences are in addition to Norwegian Getaway’s Illusionarium and Grammy Experience, as previously announced.

Headlining the 787-seat Getaway Theater is the seven-time Tony Award nominated Broadway musical, LEGALLY BLONDE. Liverpool Confidential has called the show, “Kind-hearted, comical and camp, Legally Blonde – The Musical is right up there with Mamma Mia! and Hairspray.”

LEGALLY BLONDE tells the story of Elle Woods who, after being dumped by her boyfriend, follows him to Harvard Law School to win him back. With the help of some new-found friends, she learns that it’s so much better to be smart.

The show opened on Broadway at the Palace Theater on April 29, 2007 and closed in 2008 after playing 595 performances. The show was also one of London’s most popular West End shows, where it played at the Savoy Theatre and won three Laurence Olivier Awards, including one for “Best New Musical.” In addition to being a bona fide Broadway hit musical, LEGALLY BLONDE is a global success and is currently touring in Australia.

BURN THE FLOOR
Offering shows in both the Getaway Theater and more intimate performances, dance sensation BURN THE FLOOR will dazzle guests with their re-invented ballroom dancing.

Beginning with, and maintaining all the wonderful traditions and the social history of the Ballroom dance art form, BURN THE FLOOR is a groundbreaking show, serving as a melting pot of styles, energy and excitement for today’s generation of dancers. It is Ballroom “supercharged.”

During the course of the show, the dancers perform all the Ballroom and Latin styles, including The Waltz, Cha Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rumba, Foxtrot, Quickstep,
Mambo, Tango, Swing, Jive, Lindy Hop, Viennese Waltz, and Paso Doble. The music is eclectic, from Swing and Waltz classics to J-Lo and Credence Clearwater. Two vocalists perform in many languages during the show, including English, Spanish and Portuguese.

The show premiered in London in 1999 and toured the US for the first time in 2000, including performances at Radio City Music Hall. After touring around the world, in a variety of countries, including Japan, Singapore and Australia, BURN THE FLOOR premiered on Broadway in 2009. Originally intended to be a limited run, the show opened to rave reviews in New York and extended its original run into January 2010, performing 193 shows. Already staged in more than 300 cities globally, BURN THE FLOOR is currently in the midst of its World Tour of the Broadway Production with dates in Holland, Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan, and will return to the US later this year before joining Norwegian Getaway in 2014.

Norwegian Getaway will feature multiple, specially-designed entertainment venues throughout the ship so that guests can choose from a wide variety of entertainment each evening of their cruise with choices to appeal to a broad audience.

LEVITY ENTERTAINMENT GROUP COMEDY AND HOWL AT THE MOON IN HEADLINERS

Headliners Comedy Club on Norwegian Getaway will feature top-tier comedians presented through the line’s new partnership with Levity Entertainment Group, the world’s largest producer of live comedy. Levity employs over 300 artists nationwide each week, creating special events, original tours, and television specials with some of the biggest names in comedy, including Daniel Tosh, Amy Shumer, Bill Cosby, Gabriel Iglesias and Jeff Dunham, who is currently the most successful touring comedian worldwide. Levity packages and produces best-in-class talent for all live experiences, including premium comedy clubs, international comedy festivals, corporate events and large-scale arena and stadium shows. Levity will bring a new level of comedy entertainment on board Norwegian Getaway, offering 12 shows per week.

The world’s greatest rock n’ roll dueling piano show, Howl at the Moon, which received rave reviews on Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Breakaway, will also be featured in Headliners on board Norwegian Getaway. This total entertainment experience features talented piano players who not only entertain the guests; they make the guests part of the show. The fun is centered around two baby grand pianos and a full out rock show with Howl’s entertainers playing the best music from 70’s rock to hip-hop for four hours per show. Howl at the Moon, with multiple locations across the United States, encourages people to channel their inner rock star, so guests should get ready to clap, sing, dance and howl.

Currently being built at Meyer Werft in Germany, Norwegian Getaway will be 146,600 gross tons and offer a wide range of accommodations. The ship represents an opportunity for the Norwegian guest to “get away” from the routine of work, school, and daily stress, and find a true respite at sea that reflects the energy and culture that Miami is known for worldwide.

To date, the company has revealed the ship’s groundbreaking design, including The Waterfront and 678 Ocean Place; a wide range of indoor and outdoor venues on three dynamic decks that create a whole new complex at sea and enhances guests’ connection with the ocean. Celebrity Chef and Food Network star Geoffrey Zakarian will also open three dining concepts on Norwegian Getaway: Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian; Ocean Blue on the Waterfront and The Raw Bar, that were recently launched on Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway’s New York -based sister ship. Norwegian Getaway will also be the first to have the GRAMMY® Experience at sea which will feature artifacts chosen and curated by the GRAMMY Museum® along with live performances by past GRAMMY winners and nominees, among others. The ship will also feature an all-new dining and entertainment experience, The Illusionarium. A first of its kind at sea, The Illusionarium will envelop guests in the fascinating world of magic, inviting them to experience the astonishing illusions of world-class magicians and supernatural special effects. In addition, every Norwegian Getaway sailing will feature a dazzling fireworks show in Spice H20.

The 4,000 passenger ship will also feature a rich mix of stateroom options, including The Haven by Norwegian, comprised of 42 Suites at the top of the ship in an exclusive, private key-card enclave and 22 additional Suites located throughout the ship; the innovative Studios, designed and priced for solo travelers; a wide range of Oceanview staterooms, Balcony and Mini-Suites; along with Spa Balcony, Mini-Suites and Suites in close proximity to the spa.

Norwegian Getaway will sail seven-day cruises from Miami to the Eastern Caribbean beginning on February 1, 2014, with ports of call including Philipsburg, St. Maarten; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Nassau, Bahamas. To book a cruise on Norwegian Getaway, contact me at dreameztravel@gmail.com!
