***Avalon Waterways is a Great River Cruising Choice!

In November 2022 I had the opportunity to go on an Avalon River Cruise through Normandy, France.  Our sailing was on the Tapestry II.  We had 116 guests onboard.  Guests were from the United States, Australia, Canada, and the Philippines.  Guests were all different ages.  There were 116 crew.  1:1 ratio – amazing! We left out of Paris and returned there 7 days later.  River cruising is a wonderful form of travel.  One of the benefits of cruising with Avalon Waterways is that Avalon is only one of the travel specialties under the Globus umbrella.  Globus has been in business since 1928 so is a company that you can trust, and I would highly recommend.  Globus other specialties include different types of touring.  Since they have the supplier relationships already well established across the world, the excursions offered by Avalon Waterways are associated with extremely talented knowledgeable guides and transportation in regard to/from excursions is very effectively provided by trusted coach (bus) partners of Globus.   I will outline some of the highlights of taking a river cruise.

A river cruise in Europe will many times require you to go through multiple locks.  On our cruise, we went through 6 locks in each direction.  Watching the lock process is fascinating and can be viewed anywhere in the outdoor areas of the ship or the comfort from your suite!  Your bed is facing the balcony so you can be resting comfortably while taking in the outdoor scenery.  It is truly an exciting and amazing process!  Similar to the locks in the Panama Canal but at a smaller scale and at more frequent intervals.

On an Avalon cruise, there are many opportunities to learn.  There are guest lecturers, local chefs that come on board to give presentations, local entertainers that come on board, just to name a few.  All excursions are included in the fare of the cruise.  There is usually at least one excursion a day and there are also days with multiple excursions.  Sometimes there is an optional excursion that you can take advantage of, or you can enjoy your free time on your own.  Sometimes you are in one city/town in the morning and another city/town in the afternoon.  You get to experience and view the actual culture firsthand at each stop along the way.  You wear a ‘Whisperer’ device that allows you to hear very clearly what the guide is saying.   There are bicycles and walking sticks available to be borrowed at any time during the cruise.

Our itinerary in France included stops in Vernon, Caudebec, Rouen, Conflans, and Paris.  The longest day and highlight of the trip was the trip to the Normandy Landing Beaches.  On the coach our guide told us about the historic D-Day events and about all the locations we visited.  We visited the cliffs, landing beaches, and American cemetery.  It was an emotional and meaningful day.

On board the ship, besides enjoying the beautiful scenery going by, you can work out in the gym, enjoy snacks and expresso, read a book or watch a movie in the club lounge.  There are Pilates and Yoga classes offered by the Adventure Host.  There are no on board announcements, just peace and quiet.  No rough waters.  There is an elevator so each level of the ship is accessible.  There is cinema night with a showing of a related movie.  At least one night will be a musical performance.  Another night was a vaudeville (Can Can French burlesque) show.

There is one main dining room that has seating available to everyone.  Dinner time quite often is between 6:00 and 8:00.  Beer, wine, sparkling water, and soda are included at all meals.  The food is amazing.  Service is exceptional.  There is a happy hour every day where all drinks are 50% off. There is an option a buffet on the main deck for dinner also.

One evening, guests are allowed a Wheelhouse Tour where the captain will explain all the tools/devices he uses to navigate the ship.  It is a great learning opportunity. Questions are encouraged.

As you can see, river cruising is a wonderful way to travel.  Please let me know what questions you have.  I would love to help you arrange your river cruise vacation.  I have been a travel adviser for over 21 years – you will want to talk to someone with experience.  I have relationships with the different suppliers and can make recommendations for you.  Save time and energy and let me make the arrangements for you.  I will be there to support you from the beginning to the end of your vacation.   You deserve to just look forward to your upcoming vacation without the hassles of all the nitty gritty work involved.  I would be happy to take care of the details for you.  I can be reached at 413-949-9784 and/or dreameztravel@gmail.com.   Find me on cruising.org under zip code 01040 (your location does not matter).  You can also refer to my website at http://www.dreameztravel.com.  Please take a look at the section on testimonials.  See my blog at http://www.dreameztravel.wordpress.com.  Like my page at http://www.facebook.com/dreameztravel to see daily travel postings!  I look forward to connecting with you.

***Highly Recommend Virgin Voyages!

Recently I had the opportunity to experience a vacation on Virgin Voyage’s Scarlet Lady. Virgin Voyage is an adult only cruise line!  I loved the experience.  Cruise guests are called sailors.  Service is exceptional.  On every sea terrace (balcony) there is a hammock.  Rocking in this hammock enjoying the breezes of the Caribbean was magical.  Virgin Voyages includes the following as part of their cruise fare:  all gratuities, wi-fi, soda and juices and water, all restaurants on board, and group fitness classes!  No surprise add on fees.  This was all much appreciated. We went to Virgin’s private island, Bimini, and Costa Maya. We sailed out of Miami.

On board, I thoroughly enjoyed walking the track every day.  It is on an upper deck in the rear of the ship – and is a real track – beautiful to walk or run on and enjoy the ocean and view!  Most days I had the track to myself or there was one other person.  For other exercise options, there was a boxing ring, yoga, spinning, Pilates classes, and others.

On board you can even get a tattoo!  There is no competition for spots at the pool or the whirlpool since there are no kids (need to be at least 18 years old).  There is no cruise director and rarely an announcement on the loudspeaker.  No sales pitches.  Peace and quiet – what a wonderful way to vacation.

There were so many choices for food.  There were many restaurant choices – all included.  Also, they had Grab and Go options so you could take and eat meals and/or snacks anywhere on board, in your room, or on your balcony!  The Wake, at the rear of the ship, is a wonderful restaurant.  At night you could order steak or seafood and during the day a beautiful brunch was available.  This restaurant was one of our favorites.  There was also Razzle Dazzle (great for vegans or vegetarians), Extra Virgin (Italian), Pink Agave, and the Test Kitchen.  The Test Kitchen offers special dishes that are focused on specific food specialties.  Presentation of the offerings is key.  We had 6 dishes focused on corn, salmon, beet root, shrimp or lamb, asparagus, and strawberry.  We were not sure how the experience was going to be but we found it to be a memorable unique experience and enjoyed every single dish!  In addition to these restaurants, there was always the Galley also.  There were different types of choices, including but not limited to: 24 hour breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, noodles, desserts, and much more…  You walk around to see what is offered at each stand, find a place to sit and waiters/waitresses will take your order and deliver the food!  Very organized and a nice option also.

The shows are very sophisticated and were offered at 9:00pm or 6:00pm the next day.  There is also Scarlet night where everyone wears red.  It was very cool to see.  In your room, you had the option to select from a multitude of great movies – again all included.  There are also games available on board that can be played with others in a group or you can borrow and use on your own.

At the entrance to your room, there is a doorbell!  Very nice touch.  There is a light (red/blue) system that makes others outside your cabin aware if you are home or not.   On board, your bracelet is what opens your room and allows you to charge to your account.

I would highly recommend a cruise on Virgin Voyage.  Richard Branson definitely has some great creative innovative ideas on what sailors will love and enjoy.  Sometimes he is on certain voyages to mark celebrations also!  He will be on Resilient Lady in August 2023!!

***Norwegian Escape – The Solo Traveler Experience!

Cruising as a solo traveler is a smooth, safe, and enjoyable process on the Norwegian Escape. Studio rooms created just for the solo traveler are an affordable choice. Unlike other cruise lines that charge double, a studio cabin on the Escape can be very affordable. Norwegian’s Breakaway, Epic, Getaway, and Pride of America offer studios also.

I found all different ages and types of people staying in the studios during my voyage. There were folks in their young twenties to seventies. Some people were traveling with others staying in other sections of the ship and some were traveling alone. It was a great opportunity to meet many different people.

Studio Rooms:

There are many studio cabins on the Escape. The studio cabins are located on Deck 11 and 12. Card key access is required to get into the corridor in the studios. Each cabin is 100 square feet. In the cabin there is a full size bed and plenty of space for storage. The cabin is well designed.

Studio Lounge:

In the middle of the studios hallway, easily accessible from all studio cabins, is a lounge area called the Studio Lounge. In the lounge there is a bar, specialty espresso and cappuccino coffee machine, fresh orange juice, snacks, a white board to help people connect, and comfy, attractive couches and chairs.  There is a solo traveler host available during the cruise (one of the cruise staff) that can help solo travelers with any questions and in help making group reservations.  On embarkation day there is an opportunity to meet other solo travelers during a meeting that takes place usually around 5:30-6:00. Everyone that attends introduces himself/herself and tells a little about himself/herself. It is then nice when seeing these individuals during the cruise. There is an optional meeting at 5:30/6:00 each day in the lounge to help people connect for dinner, excursions, shows, or other activities.

Dining:

If desired dining alone on the Escape is very comfortable. There are many tables for two that easily will accommodate just one. Many of these small tables are located near windows in either Taste, Savor, or The Manhattan Room. Some tables for two are located near the band in the Manhattan Room. If eating in the Garden Cafe buffet, there are plenty of seats available. I especially liked the tall table and chairs on the end. The other complimentary option is O’Sheehan’s and there are usually plenty of seats there also. I never had to wait for a seat to become available at any of the dining locations.

Entertainment:

There are many entertainment options on board that a solo traveler can take advantage of. Free entertainment includes After Midnight, Levity Comedy, Vocal Overdrive, Howl at the Moon (Dueling Pianos), Jazz, and many other music choices.  For a fee, there is a dinner show ‘For the Record – The Brat Pack’ that is excellent also.  Shows can be signed up for before sailing, from on the TV in your stateroom, or at the Box Office right on the Escape. If you enjoy a certain type of show, you can attend another performance by either booking again if the show is not full, or arriving 10 minutes before the show and going in the stand-by line. Getting a seat is not usually an issue at all.

For more information on cruising solo on the Escape, to answer a specific question, or to book a cruise please email dreameztravel@gmail.com. Also, please visit my website:

***Norwegian Escape – The Spa Experience!

Going to the spa on the Norwegian Escape is a relaxing experience. Within the spa there are specialized rooms and areas just to hang out- with a beautiful view. There is a beverage area with orange water, lemon water, and hot teas. There is a large pool with jets and a whirlpool. If you choose to buy a pass or if you are staying in a spa room, you will feel pampered in the spa area!

If you are not in a spa room, if you sign up for the thermal suite and pool on embarkation day and you get a special package price. Or, better yet, sign up online, before the cruise starts.  They sell a limited number of these packages so that the area never gets crowded, so you will want to sign up by the first day/night. The spa is open 8:00am – 10:00pm except for the last day when the thermal suites and pool are only open until 8:00pm. Pricing is based on number of days of cruise: 2 day-$79, 7 day-$199, 12 day-$279 (prices if booked before cruise starts). The pass gives you complete usage of saunas, showers, steamroom, salt room, snow room, and therapeutic pool and whirlpool.

If you have a spa pass (sticker on your card), you stop at the desk to check in. You leave your room key and in exchange they will give you a bracelet. The bracelet allows you to enter the thermal suite.  You can lock your belongings in the lockers in the changing area. In the changing area you will find a beautiful view, towels, robes, hair dryers, showers, and bathrooms. After you change and put your bathing suit and robe on, enter the spa area. There are plenty of lounging chairs. You can also select the heated tile lounge chairs to relax on.

Choices in the spa area include a pool with all different kinds of water jets, a whirlpool, a sauna, a sanarium, rain shower, aromatic steam bath, and salt bath. This spa area is a great area to just relax and unwind. I found that this area never really got crowded (even with 4900 guests!). I stayed in the studios so it was a great place to hangout as a solo traveler. I saw many other solo travelers there also. Calming music plays in the background. I either closed my eyes and relaxed or read or listened to my ipod. I felt it was a good choice especially for sea days!
